Before your arrival in Sofia, you must provide proof of valid health insurance. You can submit either:
- Your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) valid for the entire period of your stay in Bulgaria, or
- Private Health insurance valid for the entire period of your stay in Bulgaria.
Deadlines for submission:
- 15 September – Autumn semester / full academic year
- 1 February – Spring semester
Providing valid health insurance is mandatory to complete your enrollment at Sofia University. Your mobility cannot start without this document.

Recommended Additional Coverage: While the EHIC or standard insurance covers only emergencies, we strongly recommend obtaining supplementary health insurance that covers more than emergencies. Winters in Sofia can be very cold (temperatures sometimes drop to -20°C), and illness or accidents can occur, while summers can be very hot (temperatures sometimes rise to over 40°C). A good policy ensures access to doctors, medicine, and hospital care if needed. Additional coverage can include:
- Visits to general practitioners and specialists
- Prescription medications
- Hospital care if required
- Emergency services, such as ambulance or medical evacuation
Having full health coverage ensures peace of mind while studying abroad and allows you to focus on your academic and social activities without unnecessary stress.
